“The arts play a crucial role in changing the world, and I believe film precedes them all,” says Farah Nabulsi, the Palestinian British Oscar nominated and BAFTA award-winning filmmaker behind searing short film The Present. As a human rights advocate, Nabulsi is passionate about sharing socially relevant stories. “It gives voice to the silenced, thereby helping build the empathy and understanding needed to effect change.”

The Present, which won Best Drama at Aesthetica Film Festival in 2020, follows Yusuf and his daughter as they set out to buy his wife an anniversary gift. It’s a gesture demanding much patience and negotiation skills in the West Bank. Now, the film is streaming on Netflix.
