Aesthetica x Audible

Documentary Film Night .

Join us for an evening celebrating five years of exceptional storytelling. Screening I Panel I Drinks I DJ - 23 March, ICA, London
Over the past five years, the Aesthetica x Audible Listening Pitch has brought 10 extraordinary films to life, each exploring untold stories through the transformative power of listening. From personal journeys to universal truths, these films have premiered at Aesthetica, gone on to screen at SXSW and Sundance, and some have gained distribution through the Guardian.
At its heart, the Listening Pitch is about reimagining the listening experience. It brings life to untold stories and celebrates extraordinary voices that might otherwise go unheard. At this screening, we celebrate storytelling that connects us to our world and to each other. These vignettes remind us why listening – and truly hearing – matters.

Proud to Present

Voice Shift, dir. Roberto Duque

Voice Shift follows trans femme individuals as they seek a voice that reflects their gender identity. Guided by a trans vocal coach, it weaves together stories from different stages of their journeys. More than a study of technique, this is a story of identity, resilience and the wider social and political weight of a person’s voice.

Speed of Sound, dir. Jade Ang Jackman

A sonic portrait of self-professed adrenaline junkie, Carina Edlinger, whose athletic prowess and determination led her to win Gold at the Beijing Winter Paralympics in 2022. She skis 80 mph down a snow laden mountain at two percent vision with nothing but the voice of her guide, faith in her practice and rush of wind behind her.

The Things We Don’t Say, dir. Ornella Mutoni

30 years after the genocide, a group of young Rwandans confront buried family secrets and inherited trauma. Guided by therapist Emilienne, they come together to break cycles of pain and begin healing the wounds passed down through generations. The film is now available via Guardian Documentaries.

Old Lesbians, dir. Meghan McDonough

For the last quarter century, retired schoolteacher Arden Eversmeyer journeyed from Houston across the country to record hundreds of oral “herstories” with a mostly invisible population that is rapidly disappearing. Old Lesbians honors Arden’s legacy by animating the resilient, joyful voices she preserved.
