Accessibility
The Aesthetica Short Film Festival is committed to providing a safe and all-inclusive environment for all attendees, across both the in-person and virtual formats.
Venue Access
Though some venues are located in York’s historic buildings, the majority are fully wheelchair accessible – please check the programme for more details. Please note, wheelchair spaces are subject to availability. All films will also be able to view through the online platform.
In 2022, ASFF will take place with a mixture of in-person and virtual events, allowing On Demand access to audiences from their own homes. The virtual platform can be accessed on computers, smart TVs, smart phones and all tablet devices.
Speech to Text
In order to make our industry events – including panel discussions, masterclasses and industry spotlights – inclusive and available to all audiences, we will be implementing speech to text captioning across all virtual activity at Aesthetica Short Film Festival 2022.
Hearing Loops & Subtitles
All foreign language films will include English subtitles. In addition, films in the English language will have the option to be viewed with subtitles / closed captions where possible. Look out for the subtitle symbol in the programme. Hearing loops and headphones available at City Screen.
Carers, Personal Assistants & Interpreters
Complimentary festival passes are available to all Carers, Personal Assistants and Sign-Language Interpreters, but must be booked in advance. A proof of DLA or a valid CEA card is required.
Our Family Friendly Content
As part of our commitment to engage with younger audiences, ASFF presents a selection of diverse Family Friendly screenings, which will be released daily. See the daily programme for details.

Health & Wellbeing
Covid-19 Policy
- The pandemic means that now more than ever we need to create safe environments for guests. The festival has undertaken a full risk assessment for Covid-19, and staff will be available for any questions you may have about enjoying a safe festival.
- In line with the UK government guidelines, social distancing has ended, and masks are a personal choice. You may be asked by a specific venue to wear a mask, please abide by the venue’s policies.
- We ask that if you have any Covid symptoms or test positive that you do not attend the festival. Please scan into venues to assist with track and trace. We recommend taking a lateral flow test before attending to ensure that we can prevent the spread.
- Please wash your hands and sanitise regularly, especially at key touch points. In instances of shared equipment, these will be wiped down after each use. We are asking attendees to book seats at certain venues to avoid queues forming.
Keeping You Safe in our VR & Interactive Media Spaces
- In addition to the above, there will be a timed arrival and departure system in place for VR & Interactive experiences. Pre-booking is essential.
- Robust cleaning procedures will be in place across all headsets, peripherals and spaces.

Sustainability at Aesthetica
- Sustainability is a key focus at Aesthetica. We recognise our responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint, whilst presenting outstanding film. We have reduced environmental impact at every stage of festival planning. Please find out more below.
- ASFF is a hybrid festival, encouraging positive engagement with film from audiences’ homes, eliminating the requirement for travel and reducing carbon emissions on our part. This extends to all delegates.
- A majority of ASFF’s marketing will take place digitally. Printed and physical assets are all made responsibly, with reuse and repurpose for future events in mind. We recycle as much of our branding as we can each year. The festival will be printing a limited run of festival guides, with a digital version available to all audiences online. All printed materials are made with responsibly sourced and FSC certified materials.
- ASFF will be offering audiences the opportunity to purchase a cardboard headset to view 360 films. These are fully reusable and recyclable.
- We have a lanyard return scheme. Please visit the Hub at City Screen to find out more.
