Underwire Festival is set to open in a matter of days on 19 November at the Yard Theatre, London. The event celebrates female short filmmakers and brings together the best emerging talent in the film industry. Aside from screening some outstanding films the festival offers women a step-up in the world of cinema and some very talented ladies will be showcased at screenings of In The Cut, Ring Masters and She Scores. New filmmakers will also be promoted in the Quarterbacks screening, featuring films made by under-25s, and the most exciting and provocative female directors will appear in the Celluloid Sculptors screening.
For those wanting to learn more about the industry the Yard become a hub of panels, workshops and masterclasses on 23 November. Highlights include The Short Film Surgery with the Film Festival Doctor, Birds Eye View Presents: Short Films to Features, Shooting People presents: Crowdfunding Masterclass and a Directing Actors Workshop in partnership with Euroscript and Central School of Speech & Drama.
In addition to the screenings there will be several special events too. On Friday the annual LiveWire event will feature comedy short films and stand up comedy by Lou Saunders, Miss L and Isy Suttie. LOCO are also presenting Challenging Comedy, a training day for all writer performers looking to get a foot in the door of the film world at the Hackney Attic.
The Girls on Film event, in partnership with Little White Lies, is a whole day dedicated to panel discussions focused on the representations of women in cinema. Tackling some tough questions, the sessions include The Bechdel Test: The Ugly Truth, Act Your Age: Is there a place for Older Women on screen?, Honest Lies: Representation of Prostitution in Cinema and Is the Manic Pixie Dream Girl Dead.
