New for 2019: ASFF Programme Preview

The Aesthetica Short Film Festival returns to York with an unrivalled programme of shorts, feature and VR films paired with over 100 industry events, guaranteed to inspire.

As part of the 2019 programme, the BAFTA-Qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival (6-10 November) is delighted to welcome a wealth of key speakers and new events. In spotlight is Rankin, a key creative brand within British culture, having been associated with some of the nation’s most iconic celebrities – including Kate Moss, David Bowie and Vivienne Westwood. Speaking at the festival this year, Rankin will share insights into the growth of an empire, moving from photography to print media (founding Dazed & Confused and Hunger) to film direction.

In celebration of another director – one of the most prolific in British filmmaking history – ASFF hosts a masterclass on Stanley Kubrick, 20 years after the release of his final film Eyes Wide Shut. Jan Harlan, who was Executive Producer on several of Kubrick’s seminal pieces of work including The Shining and Full Metal Jacket will be in conversation, Harlan will delve into an ongoing collaboration with the auteur whilst celebrating his pioneering spirit.

From behind the camera to behind the programme, ASFF welcomes another winning collection of Guest Curators. Mathieu Ajan – Founder of Bounce – will be joining the festival with a showcase of leading black filmmakers, simultaneously pushing for more diverse representation in the industry. Meanwhile, 50 years on from the first moon landing, ASFF screens Sundance favourite Apollo 11– a feature length chronicle of the mission.

New to 2019, ASFF is thrilled to introduce its Industry Marketplace, the first event of its kind in the UK that welcomes delegates to meet 40 organisations from the UK and beyond, including BFI NETWORK, Sheffield Doc/Fest and Locarno Film Festival. The event is a platform for attendees and delegates to engage with key organisations from across the sector. It is a destination for individuals to meet face-to-face with those changing the industry today.
