New Award for ASFF 2016: Northern Film School Award for Best Screenplay

The BAFTA Qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival is currently open for entries for its 6th edition, which will take place 3-6 November in York. ASFF showcases 300 films as part of its Official Selection, along with a series of guest showcases, masterclasses, networking sessions and events.

All films in the Official Selection are in competition to receive a number of awards. These awards recognise outstanding talent in filmmaking practice, and are a prestigious accolade. The winning films are selected by a jury of industry experts, and are presented at the Closing Night Awards Ceremony on Sunday evening.

New for 2016 is the Northern Film School Award for Best Screenplay, presenting £1,000 to the winning filmmaker whose work is chosen from the Official Selection for outstanding screenplay. The Northern Film School at Leeds Beckett University is one of the best known film and television schools in the UK, making innovative and award winning films for over 25 years. Storytelling, technical expertise and creativity, all taught by professionals, make our graduates the filmmakers of the future. They present this award at ASFF to champion outstanding screenplay, and support talent development.

Previous award winners at ASFF have gone on to achieve further award success, including wins at the Oscars (Stutterer, Benjamin Cleary, in 2016) and BAFTAs (The Bigger Picture, Daisy Jacobs, in 2015) and have broadened their audience beyond the film festival circuit. Festival programmers in attendance at ASFF have selected ASFF films to screen at other festivals internationally, and professional connections made at ASFF have resulted in several high-profile collaborations.
