Running from the 6-10 November, the BAFTA-Qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival will be using Everyman’s Art-Deco cinema as one of the key venues, to present to audiences a visceral, groundbreaking programme of films from both established and emerging filmmakers alike as well as an esteemed social strand of networking events.
Having originally opened in 1937, the cinema – a historical Grade II Listed building with its refined brick makeup and Art Deco detailing – welcomed York cinemagoers for decades, until it was spiffed up in 2017 when Everyman became its new parent. Boasting four newly refurbished screens and with a tastefully theatrical quality to its furnishings, this venue provides a local cinematic experience like no other. Now film lovers can enjoy the festival’s carefully selected Everyman-set screenings – which will run from 10am – 6pm daily–- from the comfort of the cinema’s colourful and cosy seats.
Alongside this masterful programme of short form wonders, enjoy the festival’s Meet the Filmmakers Social (7-9pm, Saturday 9 November) in the decadently renovated upstairs bar, the perfect setting for a night of networking with the many talented creatives presenting their work this year.
London College of Fashion will also be utilising the cinema’s aesthetically vibrant surroundings for their ASFF showcase and drinks reception. Their 2019 programme celebrates the importance of narrative as a tool for awareness, while promoting fashion film as a tool for social change.
Finally, the Manchester School of Art will be casting their eyes to the future with a curated collection of boundary-pushing shorts that hail the coming of the digital revolution. Using the cinema’s boutique setting, the school will showcase the best in a new generation of filmmaking that explores themes relevant to society today.
