Melanie Williams is Reader in Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia and Head of its Department of Film, Television and Media Studies. She is the author of Prisoners of Gender: Women in the Films of J. Lee Thompson (2009), David Lean (2014) and Female Stars of British Cinema (forthcoming) as well as many articles on different aspects of British cinema, particularly in terms of questions of gender. She also co-edited the books British Women’s Cinema (2009), Ealing Revisited (2012), Mamma Mia! The Movie: Exploring a Cultural Phenomenon (2012) and Shane Meadows: Critical Essays (2013). She is currently working on an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project on 1960s British cinema.
