Born in Bristol, UK, James started as an apprentice picture editor in 1982 working on early Aardman Animation projects and numerous Natural History documentaries.

In 1984, while travelling in Australia, James assisted on the soundtrack of ‘Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome’. This experience led him to divert his energies from picture assisting to sound post production.

James founded Soundbyte Studios in 1994, and went on to supervise the sound track on Aardmans ‘Chicken Run’ establishing him as the Supervising Sound Editor he is today.
In 2005, after critical success with ‘Notes on a Scandal’, David Yates and Warner Bros. called on James to supervise the sound for ‘Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix’. This major break created the opportunity to work on a string of blockbuster ‘tent pole’ films, including the final 3 Harry Potter instalments, ‘Sherlock Holmes’, ‘Clash of the Titans’, ‘Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’, Ken Branagh’s ‘Cinderella’ and Patty Jenkins ‘Wonder Woman’.?

James has also been credited with both Supervising and Re-Recording on the recent ‘Me Before You’, ‘A United Kingdom’ , ‘Anthropoid’ and ‘Murder on the Orient Express’.
In 2016, as result of ‘Outstanding Achievements in Film’ James was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As of 2019, James is currently working on four major motion pictures for Universal and Disney. This year, he was also nominated for a BAFTA for his work on ‘Mission Impossible: Fall-out’
