Slacks (2014) by filmmaker Laura Pennell screened in the music video category at ASFF last year. The three-minute film gracefully accompanies singer St. South’s (Olivia Gavranich) subtle lyrics and sensitive performance. This music video assemble depicts a girl’s journey as she recovers from heartbreak and learns to take care of herself, thereby discovering her independence.
Director Pennell recruited twins Pauline and Tarlina Fowler for scenes that delve into the psyche of a young women, offering a deeper insight into the character’s emotional struggle and survival, whilst retaining the hypnotic calm of the song. Slacks is written and performed by St. South: the project of Gavranich. Self-described as “easy chill”, her music combines hip-hop soul-driven beats with distinctively warm vocals, creating a sound at once unique and instantly recognisable.
