ASFF 2021: Day Four

The 2021 Aesthetica Short Film Festival enters day four. Get ready for another stimulating selection of in-person and virtual screenings, masterclasses, guest programmes and networking sessions. Here is our 10 to See for today, including a chance to hear from two very special filmmakers talk about their craft.

Pleased To Meet You (In Person & Online)
Film Programme

Our fourth strand, Pleased To Meet You, explores interpersonal connections, the contexts with which they are formed and how they ultimately define us. Platonic, romantic, familial: there are numerous types of relationships that we form over a lifetime. But how do we define our associations? At what point does an acquaintance become something more?

Amazonian Traces of Self: Sound Installation (12:00 – 21:00, Spark York)
Special Event

Take a moment and consider how sound creates vast landscapes in the mind, conjures memories and stimulates the senses. New to Aesthetica Short Film Festival, this one-off installation by experimental artist Yifeat Ziv is located in Spark York, one of the city’s most popular outdoor venues.

Making Contact: Tales From Isolation (12:00 – 14:00, City Screen)
New Wave

Presented by London College of Communication, the protagonists of these films attempt to connect in different ways: discovering a link with one’s past, trying to tell a parent the truth about one’s identity, reaching out to an audience online when live performance is not possible and connecting with another person without words.

A Rising Star: Gamba Cole (13:30 – 14:30, Live Channel 1)

British rising star Gamba Cole is set to have a standout year in 2021 with the lead of Christian in Stephen Merchant’s The Offenders for BBC/Amazon opposite Christopher Walken and Eleanor Tomlinson. Best known for his role as Malcolm in BBC’s Soon Gone: A Windrush Chronicle with Lenny Henry, join Gamba as he discusses his blossoming career.

Networking Session 4: Development, Funding & Support (14:00 – 15:00, 1331)

All big ideas need help to develop. We welcome industry representatives from leading film and arts organisations to connect with filmmakers and offer their advice on new projects.

Harry MacQueen In Conversation (15:00 – 16:00, Yorkshire Museum & Live Channel 2)

First emerging as a filmmaker with Hinterland, a Radio On inspired travelogue, writer-director Harry MacQueen’s second feature is the hugely acclaimed Supernova, starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. MacQueen joins Jason Wood (HOME) for an illustrated talk about his career.

Roots, Seeds, Flowers, Fruit (16:00 – 17:30, York Theatre Royal)
Guest Programme

T A P E specialise in curating programmes which centre the voices of BIPOC and female filmmakers. In this programme, the London-based collective present a series of shorts made by women of Muslim faith or heritage, which shatter stereotypes within and outside of the community.

A Radical Gaze: Sally Potter In Conversation (18:00 – 19:00, Yorkshire Museum & Live Channel 2)

Sally Potter is a legendary filmmaker whose ground-breaking films have earned her a rightful place in cinema history, with films such as Orlando, The Tango Lesson and The Party. Potter joins us for a conversation that will span five-decades of filmmaking, exploring her principles and ideas.

Blind As A Beat: Premiere (18:30 – 20:00, York Theatre Royal Studio)
Special Event

This year, Aesthetica Short Film Festival and Audible teamed up to run The Listening Pitch. The 2021 recipients are Jessi Gutch and Liz Jackson, with an artistic celebration of the power of listening set against the backdrop of a film director’s failing eyesight, told through four phases of loss. Join us for the premiere of Blind as a Beat and a Q&A with the filmmakers about the project. Followed by a drinks reception.

The 2021 Aesthetica Short Film Festival runs in-person from 2-7 November and online from 2-30 November. Join us in-person, online, or a mixture of both. Tickets start from £25.
