London’s Underwire Festival Showcases a Selection of Film Shorts by Women

As ASFF 2014 completes a successful and energetic four-day run, the fifth edition of Underwire Festival gets started in the capital. Taking place in London until 15 November, this unique festival seeks to support women working in the UK film industry through a dynamic showcase of female filmmaking talent from across the crafts. Launched in 2010 by Gabriella Apicella and Gemma Mitchell, this innovative festival highlights the surprising fact that women still make up a small proportion of film creatives.

Working with the belief that a more gender balanced industry will benefit everyone, Underwire endeavours to support a diversity of perspectives, stories and experiences, in and out of the film world. Over the next five days the festival will be celebrating and recognising female practitioners working in all areas of the film industry, from writers, producers, cinematographers, directors, editors, composers, sound designers, actors, under-25 talent and female protagonists. With a selection of 10 film programmes, including Sonic Sirens, She Scores, Ring Masters and Leading Ladies, Underwire offers audiences an alternative outlook on the thriving industry of short film.

In addition to screenings and a host of networking events, live music, comedy, and parties, the festival offers a range of skills development opportunities, including Writing Comedy: Finding Confidence in the Collective for women comedy writers with LOCO, Euroscript and Wolf + Diva, the Underwire Alumnae Reunion for previous award-winners, nominees and aspiring film creatives, Animate Projects presents: Persistence of Vision featuring Kris Hofmann, Laura Hulme and Kim Noce, and BECTU‘s Social Media Marketing Surgery. Working in partnership with Little White Lies and returning to the festival this year is Girls on Film – a programme dedicated to exploring the representation of women on screen.

Underwire Festival, until 15 November, The Yard Theatre, Hackney Wick, London.
