There are a variety of passes available to allow you to experience the festival in your own way:

  • 3 DAY SCREENING PASS
    Gives full access to all festival screenings from 9 – 11 November, including the BAFTA, Warp Films and Yorkshire Film Archive special programmes. Offering the best value, this Pass enables you to see your choice of films at the venues you want, and offers access to all the screening venues.

  • 1 DAY SCREENING PASS (Friday, Saturday and Sunday)
    Gives access to all of the screenings taking place on your chosen day of the festival, meaning you won’t miss out if you can’t attend all 3 days. This Pass also includes admission to the BAFTA, Warp Films and Yorkshire Film Archive special programmes on the day in question.

  • ADDITIONAL TICKETED EVENTS
    Opening Night, Closing Night, Insiders’ Views Talks and Meet the Filmmakers Event are all separate ticketed events. These should be booked individually alongside festival passes..

  • MASTER CLASSES
    Here's your chance to engage with industry professionals. We have a number of talks that cover a wide variety of topics planned, and the full list will be announced shortly.

  • COLLECTING TICKETS
    Please note that you will need to exchange your email receipt for a Festival wristband at the Festival Hub (at Visit York) before you can access the screenings. The Festival Hub will be open for you to collect your wristband from 9am on Thursday 8 November.

3 DAY SCREENING PASS (9 - 11 November 2012)
An all-inclusive 3-day pass for all screenings across the city. Includes access to all venues for complete freedom of choice with regards to your festival experience. Mix and match your favourite venues, genres and the most convenient screening times for you, and between your selected screenings enjoy shopping, a drink or something to eat in the beautiful centre of York. This ticket is valid during the whole festival from the start on Friday 9 November until the end on Sunday 11 November.

Please note that you will need to exchange your email receipt for a Festival wristband at the Festival Hub (at Visit York) before you can access the screenings. The Festival Hub will be open for you to collect your wristband from 9am on Friday 9 November.

Opening Night

Thursday 8 November 2012. 7.00pm until late
Celebrate the opening of ASFF 2012 with us at City Screen! A night of exceptional short film, experience a taste of what the festival has to offer and see the best in international filmmaking. Guests to the Opening Night will receive a complimentary drink with their ticket and an Aesthetica Goody Bag, filled with a selection of great gifts. The screening will be followed by an after-party with live music.

Raindance - Filmmaking: The Essentials for Success

Chris Thomas of Raindance Film Festival will give you a viable plan and dozens of filmmaking tips on what works in the business. Having taught and developed courses for film directing with Raindance for many years he believes learning is a two-way process and as a filmmaker it never ends. Including a troubleshooting session, Chris will run through the basic essentials you will need to create a film and to create a plan to launch your career, focussing on the essential elements: finding cast and crew, shooting tips, getting your film seen, the career ladder, distribution and exhibition and of course, how to get paid.

Channel 4: Tabitha Jackson - The Art of Television

Tabitha Jackson is Channel 4's Commissioning Editor for Arts. After 15 years making films in the UK and the US, Tabitha joined Channel 4 in 2007, becoming Editor of More4 and running the award winning international documentary strand True Stories. She wants Channel 4 arts to innovate, provoke, delight and express creatively the experience of contemporary existence. Tabitha will focus on the recent series All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry, illustrating television's attempts to work with artists and present visual art in a new, more accessible way.

The Trouble with Film Criticism – Panel Discussion

What do the critics say? Do they influence our choices as viewers? What does this mean for filmmakers? Should we conform? This panel discussion addresses these questions. Ginette Vincendeau, Professor of Film Studies at King’s College London and contributor to Sight & Sound and BBC Radio, will discuss the challenges posed by her dual identity as academic and film critic. Jason Wood, Director of Programming for Curzon Cinemas and Acquisitions Advisor for Artificial Eye, will look at the current landscape for film writing in the UK and the impact of critics. Matt Bochenski, Editor of film magazine Little White Lies and Editorial Director of creative agency The Church of London questions whether there is such a thing as film criticism. And, if so, what is the point and how does it work?

Myles McLeod - Creating an Animated World

BAFTA winning animators The Brothers McLeod have produced series for the BBC and Disney, directed TV commercials for Guinness and Skittles and worked with Tate and Wii/PlayStation. Drawing on his extensive screenwriting experience, Myles McLeod will provide insight into creating an animated world, exploring the processes of creating characters, a fictional landscape and stories for animation.
