BAFTA Qualifying ASFF: Experimental, Jason Wishnow’s The Sandstorm

With just three weeks to go until the 5th anniversary edition of the Aesthetica Short Film Festival opens, we explore the thrilling and unpredictable world of short film with a thirst for adventure and surprise in our Experimental strand at ASFF 2015. This unique selection opens the doors to a range of film practices from around the world which are perhaps defined only by their refusal to accept genre conventions and boundaries. Ranging at liberty through time and space, story and image, they represent the best of avant-garde short film, set free to discover and embrace new possibilities.

ASFF 2015’s Experimental selection includes Jason Wishnow’s The Sandstorm (China/USA 2014), a lyrical “lo-fi sci-fi” tour through a bleak future in which communication lines dissolve and a water smuggler navigates a tumultuous, dystopian city on the brink, starring Ai Weiwei, Hu Jianing and others.

Watch The Sandstorm in Experimental, Reel 1 at ASFF, 6-8 November, at venues across York.

Films from our Experimental strand screen across the city from 5-8 November.
