Aesthetica Short Film Festival champions international contemporary cinema and has screened films from over 65 countries, paying tribute to the universal appeal of film. In collaboration with a variety of innovative organisations, the Festival works closely with film platforms from around the world to establish long-standing relationships with key players from the international film industry. In 2015, the Guest Country programme featured films from Brazil, China and Cuba, transporting audiences to fresh cinematic landscapes.
In anticipation of this year’s Festival, we turn the spotlight on China, reflecting on ASFF 2015’s special screening curated by director Ting Liu. A showcase of independent filmmaking, encompassing observational drama and frank documentary-making, these films explore the world of punk music and youth culture through the eyes of teenagers in China today, as well as that of older generations trying to keep up.
