Filmmaker Kate Herron’s short Valentine (2014) screened at ASFF last November. The three minutes, 39 seconds comedy follows the tale of a hopeless romantic and a cynic. On Valentine’s Day, the pair realise that love is right in front of them. Directed and co-written by Herron with the comedy troupe Birthday Girls (comedians Beattie Edmondson, Rose Johnson and Camille Ucan), Valentine has screened and picked up nominations at film festivals worldwide including Flickerfest, Palm Springs International ShortsFest, Raindance, and the London Short Film Festival. In the build up Valentine’s Day, this week is the perfect chance to catch a glimpse of this hilarious comedy – now available to view online.
Part of ASFF 2014’s Official Selection, the film was shown alongside popular comedies such as Tsveta Lozanova’s Happy Birthday Cindy Wei and Entretien D’Embauche by Nicolas Novak. Every year ASFF welcomes short films up to 30 minutes long by emerging and established filmmakers from around the world. The categories are varied and include: advertising, animation, artists’ film, comedy, dance, documentary, drama, experimental, fashion, music video and thriller. Entries are open for the festival’s fifth year and takes place annually in York across four days – this year from 5-8 November – showcasing outstanding contemporary cinema in 15 unique screening venues.
