Art Basel reveals details of its 2017 film programme in Hong Kong. From the 20-25 March, the highly-anticipated fair will screen over 30 film and video works as part of its feature-length selection following the success of this strand in 2016. Beginning with the world premiere of My Dear Art (2017) on Wednesday 20 March, the Film Program comprises an extraordinary series of international film. Directed by Hsu Hao-hsuan (b. 1984), the opening documentary follows Taiwanese art collector Yao Chien for over a year, as he visits art fairs, auctions, gallery exhibitions and museum shows across Asia and the UK. The piece features interviews with artists, gallerists, art collectors, and leading art world figures, who share their thoughts on art, collecting and its market.
Leading the way for visual experimentation will be Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang (2016), a documentary about Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang and his pyrotechnic art, along with Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen’s The Nameless (2015), which tells the story of Lai Teck, a Secretary General of the Malayan Communist Party during the 1930s and 1940s who simultaneously worked as an agent for several governments. The final day of the Film Program, Saturday 25 March, will begin with a screening of a video work by Yao Qingmei (b. 1982), followed by a short film by Joel Kyack (b. 1972). Both films explore people’s perception of self and the role of the individual in society.
Accompanying the Film Program are 34 works in the Short Film Program. Starting on 22 March with In memory of Chen Shaoxiong (b. 1962-2016), the strand will show a series of ink animations about the Chinese artist who passed away last year. Five shorts under the theme The Sun Also Rises, will explore how artists disrupt the mundanity of everyday life, while 11 video works by artists evaluate humanity’s ever-changing impact on the planet in Anthropocene. Selected from the show’s participating galleries, the Short Film Program has been curated for the fourth year by Beijing- and Zurich-based multi-media artist and producer Li Zhenhua. Participating filmmakers include: Yuri Ancarani, Boo Junfeng, Gabriel Lester, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Shen Shaomin and Zheng Chongbin.
This year both programmes – the Film and Short Film Program – will be screened at Theatre 2 within the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The fair, whose Lead Partner is UBS, takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 23-25 March.
